The Amazon
The
Amazon Rain Forest contains the largest area of tropical forest
in the world, covering 6 million sq km (2.3 million sq miles) in
nine different countries, 60% in Brazil.
Biologically,
it is the richest and most diverse region in the world, containing
about 20% of all higher plant species, perhaps the same proportion
of bird species and around 10% of the world's mammals - each type
of tree may support more than 400 insect species.
At
the heart of this region lies the huge Amazon River, the second
longest in the world, which has at least 1.000 tributaries and holds
more than 20% of the planet's fresh water.
The
Amazon is estimated to contain 2.000 species of fish, ten times
the number in European rivers, not to mention numerous reptiles
- the cayman, the giant anaconda, and mammals - amazonian manatee
and the pink river dolphin.
Manaus
is the Amazon state's capital with an urban population of approximately
one million inhabitants.
Magestic
vestiges of the rubber boom stand monumentally, refurbished and
gleaming on the edge of the Rio Negro: the Amazon Theater, the Custom
House, the Municipal Market (pre-assembled in England before being
shipped to Brazil).
Light
clothes, comfortable shoes, sun tan cream and mosquito repellent
are recommended for the packages and cruises described on the next
pages
